さて本日も、TOEIC のスコア 860 レベルの英単語です。
ちなみにこちらの本を参考にしています。（現在販売されていないので、画像のみ）
conjunction
名詞：結合、連合、共同
◆The medicine cannot be taken in conjunction with other medicine.
この薬は他の薬と一緒に服用できません。
in conjunction with で「～と併せて、～と同時に」。
discontented
形容詞：不満な、不機嫌な
◆My wife is always discontented with me.
妻は常にわたしに不満を抱いている。
反意語はcontented (満足している)。
superficial
形容詞：表面の、うわべだけの、浅い
◆He has only a superficial knowledge of chemistry.
彼は化学について浅い知識しかなかった。
superという言葉がついているので、特別感のあるイメージですが、逆の意味を持っています。
語源英和辞典によると、こんな語源があります。
ラテン語 superficialis（表面の）→superficies（表面）＋-alis（～の）→super-（～の上に）＋facies（外形）→facio（作る）→dheh-（置く）が語源。「上面の」がこの単語のコアの語源。face（面）と同じ語源をもつ。
superが「 ～の上に」、ficial(=face)が「外形、面」という意味なので、「表面上の、うわべの」という意味なのですね。
soar
動詞：急上昇する、暴騰する、舞い上がる
◆The price of a mask soared.
マスクの値段が急上昇した。
soarとsore(痛い)を区別して覚える。
shed
動詞：流す、取り除く
名詞：倉庫、小屋
活用は、shed-shed-shed
◆The company shed 30% of the employees due to financial crisis.
財政危機のため、3割の従業員を解雇した。
shed tearsで「涙を流す」の意味。
corruption
名詞：汚職、不正
◆The master, SUKE, KAKU never ignore the political corruption in the Edo era.
江戸時代、ご隠居と助さんと格さんは、政治の汚職を見逃すことはなかった。
competent
形容詞：有能な、適格な
◆I am competent in mathematics but not incompetent in English.
わたしは数学に関しては有能ですが、英語の実力はありません。
competenceは「能力」という意味。
temperate
名詞：温和な、節度ある
◆I enjoyed Hawaii’s temperate climate.
わたしはハワイの温暖な気候を楽しんだ。
dwell
動詞：住む、とどまる
◆He dwells in his room and dwells on his past.
彼は部屋にこもり、過去をくよくよ振り返っている。
dwell on で「くよくよ考える」の意味。
名詞のdwellingは「家、住居」の意味
confine
動詞：限定する、制限する、閉じこめる
◆He is confined himself to his room indulging snacks.
彼は自分の部屋に閉じこもり、スナック菓子を堪能している。
